Summer Intensive: Plaster & Image Transfers

  • Nevada Art Museum, E.L. Cord Museum School (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Monday - Friday, June 26 - 30 / 9 am - 12 pm

Ancient and earthy, plaster is a beautiful surface to hold mixed media painting of all types. Texture is easily achieved and organic forms are simply created with this unusual medium. Students will explore using both Plaster of Paris and plaster infused fabric to create multi-layered two-dimensional paintings and three-dimensional sculptures and structures. Once the structures and paintings are constructed in plaster, students will learn various mixed media techniques and multiple ways to transfer images onto the surfaces. Everyone will come away with unique projects and an understanding of how to use plaster to enhance mixed media work.

Texture in Encaustic

Encaustic is a wildly different way to paint. Tins of hot colored wax are heated on a griddle and cool as you paint. The durability of the medium allows you to stencil and build texture as you paint and scrape back down through your layers. This class will focus on using stencils and accretion to build texture in your painting, adding imagery through collage and scraping to add lines and structure to the piece. Students will also get to explore carbon transfers, incising, and mica powders to finish their pieces. Students will complete 2-3 small pieces.

Mixed Media on Claybord

Thursdays, March 9 - 23 / 5:30 - 8:30 pm

Clayboard is a fabulous product for playful explorations and dramatic abstract work. The thin layer of bisque-fired clay is resistant to build-up and wiping away, while also giving you a surface to carve into. In this three-week class, we will dive deep into all the possibilities for the substrate. Inks, collage, image transfers, carving, pastels, stenciling, masking, and stamping will all be used. A dremel tool will also be used to explore various ways to add texture to the panels. Students will complete 3-4 pieces, which will be wired for hanging at the end.  All materials are provided for this class.
